The Boatmaker 2017. USA. 37 min. (DOCUMENTARY SHORT)

“How a man and a dream found their way to the sea…” In the late eighties, architect Ken Minor bought the plans to build a 30ft Bristol Channel Cutter wooden sailboat. His dream was to sail around the world. In 1991, he began construction on the boat in his backyard. He even built a barn next to his house to protect the operation from the elements. There isn’t one square inch of the boat that Ken didn’t construct by hand, help design or install himself. Everything is custom. From Port Townsend, Washington USA, to Queenstown, New Zealand, there are parts and materials on the boat from all over the world. You can find the rarest, most well-made materials possible for this kind of wooden vessel adorning Ken’s boat.

In 2016, twenty-five years after buying the plans, Ken finally finished building the boat and was ready to bring it down to the water. “The Boatmaker” is a story about a man, his boat, and what it takes to fulfill a lifelong dream.
